Collection of Examination Results

We are asking students to come into school at an agreed time (families have received notification of their allotted time. If there are any doubts about the time and station for results collection students should email admin@hws.haringey.sch.uk.)    Having these times allows us to spread out the flow of students to help maintain social distances. They have no other significance.

Exam results will be given out in the main Sports Hall, where there will also be advice and guidance for students who require it.  Students must come in through the Park Road entrance and leave from the Tennis Courts.

If a student is unable to come in to collect their results because they have been required to self-isolated, they should notify Ms Short, the examination officer, who will arrange to have the results emailed to their school email account.  Ms Short’s email is lsh@hws.haringey.sch.uk. Please note that we are not able to send results to any other email address other than the student’s own school email account.

Advice and Guidance

On GCSE Results Day, Thursday 20th August, there will be Careers Advice available throughout the day for students in school. Students must collect their results at the time that they have been notified (see information above) and will then be able to also obtain advice and guidance.  Mr Chris Kennington will be covering from 08:30 – 12:00 and then another colleague will be available from 12:30 – 13:30. 
So, if a student has not done better than they thought, or not as well as they thought, we can help them look at all the options ahead in further education and apprenticeships. Please try not to be anxious because the good news is that there is lots of availability of courses at Highgate Wood Sixth Form, assuming the student has got the grades to stay on, and there also places at different school sixth forms and colleges across London, whatever grades you have achieved.

Determination of Grades

The process by which final grades were determined for this year’s examinations at both A Level and GCSE is the cause for some confusion and concern amongst students, schools and families across the country. The arrangements declared on 6th August have now been superseded by the information made available in the This comes from the Department for Education’s Press Release of 17th and 18th August and Ofqual’s statement of 17th August.

The centre assessment grades that teachers submitted to exam boards will now be used as students’ final results, instead of the moderated grades produced after these results were subjected to a standardisation algorithm. However, if a student’s moderated grade was higher, this will be used instead. The exam boards have now confirmed that they will enable both the Centre Assessed Grade and the moderated grade to be made available for GCSE results day on 20th August.
Students who got their AS-levels and A-levels last week will have their results reissued with the amended grades. If they’re intending on heading to university, they should know that rhe government intends to remove temporary student number controls for universities, and are working with them to create additional capacity and ensure they’re as flexible as possible
If they will now meet an offer that they previously missed due to their moderated grades, they should contact the university.
They can release themselves from an already accepted offer if another offer has been reinstated.  The sixth form team, include Ms Pinnick, director of Sixth Form, is already supporting many A Level students to deal with the situation that this exam season has generated.

Right to Appeal

Candidates are still able to appeal as you would for any normal results, for example if an error has been made during the process. The school will need make appeals on your behalf – individual students or parents can’t make appeals themselves.  You won’t be able to appeal based on your mock grade (this was part of the “triple lock” system which was announced before this change – this is no longer in place). 
There should be more information to come on appeals. In the meantime if you believe that there has been an error in the submission of your Centre Assessed Grade please complete this Exam internal recheck form, otherwise if you wish to make an appeal, you should complete this Candidate Consent Form and return it to our dedicated email address dealing with exam issues. (exams2020@hws.haringey.sch.uk) by Tuesday 1st September. 

What about autumn exams?

As far as we know, you’ll still have the opportunity to sit exams in autumn 2020. Please email exams2020@hws.haringey.sch.uk if you wish this to be explored for you for any particular subject.

Why has this happened now and not last week or earlier?

Gavin Williamson (the Education Secretary) said that the scale of these issues only became “absolutely apparent” over the weekend, which led to this change of plan. Both he and Ofqual have apologised for the distress and uncertainty the situation has created. We know this has been extremely difficult for our students and their families, and we’re doing everything we can to support you during this stressful time
