We are proud to have a diverse and strong community at Highgate Wood School. Students are encouraged to follow our established vales of the 4Cs: Courtesy, Consideration, Contribution and Cooperation. Our students are proactive in making a positive change and helping out globally and within the community.
Our school community offers growing opportunities for students to support their care for the world, and want, to make a positive difference. For example, we have great connections with The Circle; they are an organisation empowering women globally. In addition, we also offer groups they can attend to discuss issues and take action through fundraising initiatives and raising awareness via different platforms. We offer school clubs such as the Global Feminist Group, Model UN, Green Schools Project and Skittles Club (LGBT+ group).
Staff and students are excellent at seeking fundraising opportunities for different charities. This year (2019) the school raised over £1,000 for comic relief! At Highgate Wood School students are all selected to be apart of a House Team: DaVinci, Edison and Seacole. In their house teams they have each chosen one charity to raise money for by organising bake sales, buying a wrist band of their house team colour and hosting or participating in various events.
Different departments at the school have become increasingly involved with our online community. Have a look at our channels below – follow us by clicking on the buttons.
Our Eco Schools team participated in the #GBSchoolClean and collected litter found around the school. During their clean, members of the team spoke to other students and educated them on the importance of being kind to the environment. In the playground, students found rubbish made from plastic, and told others how dropping litter on the floor can end up in the ocean and cause death to sea creatures.
Our students are bold for brave girls. So far, they have planned and hosted various fundraising events such as bakes sales and sponsored silences. Global Feminists have shared their efforts on social media during these events to help expose the charity to more schools, people and communities. A total amount of £323.95 was raised by our students for Plan International. If your child attends the school and is interested in joining the club (boys can be feminists too), see our extra-curricular page for details. Information for the Global Feminist Club is under Campaigns.
We gave our students the opportunity to voice their opinions around climate change at a group meeting. Students also created posters and graphics for around the school to encourage other members within the school community to be aware of issues around climate change. Their work delivered messages on the importance of taking action and facts of how it has affected our world already. Due to health and safety, and for the fact of students missing out on a day of education, we did not permit students to attend the Strike4Climate.
Global Feminists at Highgate Wood School post empowering content and material on their Instagram and Twitter account, and have been recognised by the famous group ‘The Circle. Furthermore, students who are a part of the club believe it’s very important for girls and women around the world to have equal opportunities, such as having rights to an education and equal pay, stopping child marriage and sexual harassment that is seen as “okay”.
