On Wednesday 5th June our team of Year 7 book quizzers travelled to the Victory Services Club in Marble Arch for the Grand Final of the National Literacy Trust’s Reading Champions Quiz 2024. Finn, Jonah, Matilde and Charlie had triumphed in their regional heat so, together with Reserve team member Neve, they had earned their place as one of 22 teams attending from right across the UK.

When we arrived, the team were invited to choose 4 books each from an enticing bookstall, before heading downstairs to the grand Carisbrooke Hall. The atmosphere was electric and quizmaster Mr Dilly kept excitement high throughout.

While the quiz sheets were marked, we were treated to a panel discussion with authors Tom Palmer, Sita Brahmachari, Iszi Lawrence, Adiba Jaigirdar and Farida Àbíké-Íyímídé.

The Highgate Wood team tackled an extremely challenging quiz very well and were awarded 12th place.

They returned home laden with new books, bookish goodies, certificates and their Regional Winners trophy which is now proudly displayed in the school’s trophy cabinet.
