Open Evening
Thank you to the hundreds of families and prospective Year 7s who attended our Primary Transition Open Evening on Tuesday 8th October. Some great feedback, especially about our fantastic student helpers!
We had an amazing time meeting our new families at our Primary Transition Open Evening on Tuesday 8th October. During the event our staff and students gave tours to our visitors around the school introducing them to different activities set in different classrooms. Also at Open Evening our Headteacher, Patrick Cozier welcomed families with a speech in the main hall giving them an introduction to Highgate Wood School.

Each department recruited a team of students to help give families an insight to their teaching, curriculum and facilities.
Visitors to the English Department were impressed and delighted by our Year 7 students telling their autobiographical stories. The students showed confidence and flair and demonstrated our focus on oral skills at the start of Year 7.
The Music department arranged various student led music performances in room D5, which meant continuous live music for whenever the parents entered the room. Many parents were very impressed not just with the quality of the performances but also with the confidence of the students. Also during Open Evening, the department prepared for a student pianist to perform in the hall for when the parents entered for the headteachers speeches.
The Drama department ran a public rehearsal for our upcoming KS3 Black History Month performance called ‘Our History through the words of Maya Angelou’ taking place in the first week of next half term. They also had a group of KS4 students running improvisation games and exercises.
The science department held rat, eyeball, heart and lungs dissections. As gruesome as it sounds and may have been, the kids loved it!
A smashing amount of 1,044 fairy cakes were made by our team of seven Year 8 students, supported by three Year 12s (who last year completed their GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition) that were enjoyed by our visitors to the Food Department. Visitors to D&T were given a memento in the form of a HWS keyring that had been made on our Laser Cutting machine.
Headteacher, Patrick Cozier writes:
Thank you so much to the students and staff involved for your contribution. The feedback that we have had from parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents were raving about the students, but also commenting on the feel of the school and the fact that staff clearly had good, positive and mutually respectful relationships with the students. That is excellent feedback and reaffirms what is special about HWS.
