We are making swift progress with developing our Google Classrooms and look forward to making very good use of them after Easter. Teachers will then be regularly available on line to support students. Details will be published soon.
The DfE have added to their guidance on school closures with useful links for keeping children safe on-line. These are copied below.
There is a lot of support available to keep your child safe online. Below are some useful links to help parents and carers:

All students should be aware that they now have access to the school’s G Suite account. This will give you access to some resources needed for homework and also where we have some online Google Classrooms, as well as other facilities to help your home learning. (It is also where lots of Maths work is available!)
You need to login to your school email (at http://londonmail.lgfl.net/) using your regular username and password and see the email from Mr Ashman with details of your G-Suite username and password (the username is your regular school username @hws.uk.com, your password is your regular password but adding hws to the start, so if your school username is tashman.309 and your password is cheese62 your G-Suite username is tashman.309@hws.uk.com and your G_Suite password is hwscheese62) Once you have the details all you need to do is go to the regular www.google.com page and sign in on the top right (as if you were just signing in to a gmail account). Use the details for your new G-suite account to login. Clicking on the nine-dot icon (sometimes called the hamburger icon) on the top right you will see all the tools available under G Suite. First thing you need to do is to go to G Mail and check the emails you have. These will be links to folders that will then appear as “shared with me” in your Drive. If you check Show My Homework you will also see a growing number of teachers have sent you a classroom code. If you go to Classroom in your G-Suite (a green square icon when you click on the hamburger icon) and then click on the plus sign in the top right corner you should use that code to join a class.

Below please find the text of Headteacher, Patrick Cozier’s, letter to parents\carers that was circulated this morning on Parent Mail.
The letter itself can be found here.
28th March 2020
Dear Parents and Carers,
This has truly been the most extraordinary week in what are clearly unparalleled times. I would like to begin this letter by thanking you all for the support and patience you have shown as we face the unprecedented challenges of school closure and home education, whilst simultaneously dealing with a public health emergency.
I have particularly reason to be thankful for the way our community has pulled together. As many of you will know, I have been off school for the past fortnight fighting off infection. It has been hard to be incapacitated whilst so much has been happening, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues on the senior leadership team (and in particular Mr Craig Hewitt for deputising so ably), and all the staff at Highgate Wood School who have coped magnificently in my absence. I am pleased to report that I have recovered well during the course of this week and was able to resume normal work duties yesterday. I would like to thank those of you who sent in positive wishes to me and my family during this time. It means a lot.
Most of the students have now been at home for a full week, almost two for those in Years 8 and 9. I am heartened by the fact that so many have still applied themselves diligently to their studies, completing work set on Show My Homework, engaging in Sam Learning quizzes and other activities set by their teachers. I believe this shows an impressive capacity for self-study as well as demonstrating impressive resilience and fortitude.
Whilst this has happened the school has also supported the children of key workers and vulnerable students (as requested by the government), implemented a voucher system to allow those entitled to Free School Meals to still receive help with lunches, put in place a programme to allow students who do not have ready access to technology to borrow laptops and, most critically, developed internal systems that will allow us to support home learning in a more effective and cohesive way during the weeks ahead.
Having work set on Show My Homework has been an effective short-term solution, and it will continue to have its place in our home learning plans going forward, but on its own it is not enough. I am also aware that some students have found it very difficult to “pace themselves” and have felt overwhelmed by the volume of work that they are facing. This is something we are keen to address.
Like many other schools, we have adopted and implemented the G Suite for education. This includes a wide range of tools to support home learning. All students have been given their login details for this, and many have now logged on. Currently we are using it simply to share files, but we are also building some Google Classrooms so students are able to have a more dynamic, interactive learning experience whilst at home.
Over the coming days we will be supporting and training our staff so they are able to make use of these additional tools. We will also be refining our home learning programme to make it easier for students to have a balanced and managed “school day” whilst they are at home – providing greater structure where we can. We will also be looking to explore ways in which staff can share feedback with students on the study that they have completed or with helping them cope with work set.
As we know that this is a challenging time, apart from the academic learning taking place, I will also be discussing with staff how we reach out to each and every one of our students to see how they are coping and to offer our support where we can.
I will be informing all our families much more fully of these plans in the coming week. In the meantime please accept my best wishes for a pleasant and restful weekend.
Regards
Patrick Cozier

Slowly and steadily we are building up the resources to support learning and stop boredom during this difficult time. Delighted that Audible are now offering lots of their stories for free during school closures(For as long as schools are closed, we’re open. Starting today, kids everywhere can instantly stream an incredible collection of stories, including titles across six different languages, that will help them continue dreaming, learning, and just being kids.). Thankful also that Tassomai and Fast Tomato have offered us free access to their resource (students will be contacted about this very shortly). More helpful news will be posted soon.

We are advising parents and students to try and structure their day somewhat. Consider having a timetable, like the timetable at school, where some time is spent studying and some spent relaxing. Have regular mealtimes, and try to maintain as “normal” a life as you can.
Work is available on Show My Homework and SamLearning. All students received an email at their school email account yesterday which gave instructions on how to login to G-Suite.
Students can access their email with their regular school username and password here

Tomorrow will be the first day of a “new normal” for most of our families. Children will be at home, rather than school, waiting for the current crisis to resolve. We are hopeful that most of our students will be able to use much of their time at home productively, working on the tasks that have been set on Show My Homework and making use of Sam Learning. But we know that this will be a challenge.
In the coming days we will providing guidance to both students and their families about how it is best for them to work at home. We will be recommending that they structure their day, almost like their timetable in school. Every day they should spend time on their school work, revising what they already know and tackling the new work that has been set.
On both the mobile and main version of this website we are now assembling online resources. Currently we are focussed on giving access to resources to support mental health. We know this is a stressful and extraordinary time and just making ourselves ready to learn is probably the biggest challenge most of us will face. But over the coming days these resources will be expanded and developed so all school subjects will be covered for all years.
We have started to email all students with details of the different systems available to them, this includes login details to GSuite, the collection of educational applications from Google. We anticipate that we will be making significant use of this in the days to come. Can students please make sure they login to their email regularly this week?
If any student has difficulty logging into their school email they should request those details in an email from any other account that gives their name, form and date of birth. Please make that request to data@hws.haringey.sch.uk
We will be reminding parents\carers of their login details for SMHW in an email later this week.
Later today we will be informing parents of students on Free School Meals how they will receive vouchers to enable them to continue having some support. We will also be writing to all parents about our plans for online support and learning going forward.

Over this weekend we will continue to update this site with information on the response to Covid19. This will include informing families on Free School Meals of the arrangements we will be putting in place, the systems for making schooling available for the children of Key (Critical) workers and vulnerable children who are not able to remain at home, and the provision for online learning we are developing going forward.
For the immediate future students should look at Show My Homework and Sam Learning for tasks. We will be emailing them login details to all the online tools (Sam Learning, Tassomai, MyMaths etc.). This will go to their school email accounts. Students who have forgotten their login details for their school email account should contact data@hws.haringey.sch.uk giving their name, form and date of birth.

We continue with our plan to be open tomorrow for all except Years 8 and 9. Please remember we are always able to supervise students in school if their family circumstances make that necessary, irrespective of whether they are in a year group that is not in school. This is particularly true for the children of key workers – now being referred to as critical workers – and children with special educational needs.
Last night the government released additional guidance for parents on Closure of educational settings. They also released additional guidance for schools on maintaining educational provision which parents\carers may wish to read. Currently there is no additional information on the solution to cancelling the summer exams, but some news is expected later today. We will update this site as soon as we are able. In the meantime we ask that students and families remain confident that they will not be disadvantaged because of the current situation.
We are steadily building up our online resources and will keep students and families aware of these developments through this webpage and also the online resource page (linked on the mobile version of this site and also here ) For the moment the majority of our online learning is through Show My Homework and Sam Learning. (Please ignore any notifications for “handing in” work that has been set._ We are pleased that we are able to give students (and others) access to The Day which provides some useful information about the current situation with Covid-19.
We will update this page during today and over the weekend so families have a clearer idea about what the coming weeks may hold.
With thanks for your continued support covid@hws.haringey.sch.uk

We will again plan be open tomorrow for Years 7, 10, 11 and post 16. We do appreciate that this week has been hard on Years 8 and 9 and we have received representations from students in that group asking if it could be possible to attend before the school closes for an indefinite period. We would have loved to accommodate you but the circumstances made that impossible. You will be guaranteed a very warm welcome back to your classes when this crisis is over, as will the students of every other year group.

We have just sent out a survey to all families to learn who are Key Workers. In the governments programme to tackle COVID19 schools will be closed from tomorrow afternoon to most students, but will still be available for vulnerable children and also the children of Key Workers. Can every family please fill this in so we can help plan the provision.

Many thanks to Year 11 for their work during the mocks today. Tomorrow there is another morning of mocks before most of the year group will be going home – except drama students for whom the exam will mean they will go home later. We are well aware of the anxieties around the cancellation of the summer exams and spoke to the students about that today. As soon as we know more we will pass it on. For the moment we simply ask students and their families to be confident that everyone – the government, the exam boards, the schools and the teachers – are all committed to making sure the current circumstances do not disadvantage you.
Ordinarily we would now be thinking of the yearbook, dress-up day and celebration evening. These things will still happen, but we will have to be a bit more creative than usual. But you have already proved yourself to be the most amazing year group! Planning for whatever we do will have to start on-line. Please submit your ideas and suggestions to classof2020@hws.haringey.sch.uk
We are asking that Year 11 do not think of using the last day of mocks for any sort of celebration. Regrettably, in the current circumstances, it is just not appropriate. Just come in regular school uniform as if it were a normal exam day. We will find opportunities for photographs and celebrations after Easter
Posted 10:00
We will shortly be sending out a survey to all parents\carers to try and establish which families fall into the “Key worker” category so we are able to plan our provision for next week. We are still awaiting confirmation from the government on what this entails, but we will need to move quickly once that is know. We would be grateful if you could respond swiftly to the survey when it is sent.
Posted 06:30
We will continue with our plan for a partial closure today. Year 8s and 9s will continue to be at home. We do hope that Year 11s will still want to sit their mock papers. Ofqual, the exams regular, have welcomed the decision not to hold exams this summer (click here) but sitting a mock is still a useful experience. It gives students a chance to show off the knowledge and understanding they have built up and also helps show where more work might be required.

For the remainder of this week we will be continuing with the partial closure of the school with Year 8s and 9s being asked to remain at home. We would like to stress that we are always able to supervise students in school if their family circumstances make that necessary, irrespective of whether they are in a year group that is not in school. This is particularly true for the children of key workers and children with special educational needs.
We will be continuing with our mock exams this week. We know students have been working hard for them and it is important that they are given the opportunity to demonstrate this. We know there will be anxieties because the “real” exams in the summer are now not taking place as planned, and there is bound to be concern around the uncertainty of what will actually happen. But we can assure all our students that we are fully confident that neither GCSE nor A Level candidates will be disadvantaged by the current circumstances. You will be aware of the Prime Minister’s announcement this evening that all schools in England will be closed at the end of the day on Friday and, with some exceptions, will remain closed to students until further notice. We are still awaiting clarification of what this means and will post updates on this website as soon as possible. You may have noticed on our mobile website there is now another button, “Online Learning”, which is where we will be providing the links and resources to support students’ education for the immediate future. The government has posted updated guidance for households with possible coronavirus infections. The core message remains, but it does clarify “if you live with others and you are the first in the household to have symptoms of coronavirus, then you must stay at home for 7 days, but all other household members who remain well must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill.” Click here for full guidance

We anticipate that tomorrow, Wednesday 18th March, will mean another partial school closure. The school will again be closed to students in Years 8 and 9. We hope to retain normal running of the school for other years, though may ask Year 11s to go home after their mock exams. This is due to staff absences which are higher than normal for this time of year because of the new guidance requiring a 14 day period of self-isolation if anyone in the household shows either of the two symptoms associated with Covid19 – a high temperature or a persistent new cough.
Please be aware that during a partial closure we will always be happy and able to supervise any student from the affected year group whose parent\carer requires it – especially if they are carrying out a key role in the current crisis.
We are currently assembling resources for remote learning. We hope to start making these available on line from tomorrow (Wednesday). In the meantime we ask students who are having to self-isolate, but who are otherwise feeling well and unsymptomatic, to keep their eye on Show My Homework where there will already be work set and Sam Learning where tasks will also be set and students will be able to explore and attempt exercises for all subjects. If you have any issues with logging in please email.
We will provide an update on this web page before 8:00am tomorrow (Wednesday 18th March)

We have had a number of calls from parents saying that their child feels better and will be able to return to school in a day or two. Please be aware that this can not happen.
Under the current guidance:
if you live with others and you or one of them have symptoms of coronavirus, then all household members must stay at home and not leave the house for 14 days. The 14-day period starts from the day when the first person in the house became ill
This means if your child, or any member of the household develops a persistent cough or has a high temperature then everyone in the household must isolate themselves for 14 days. It is more than likely that the cough or the temperature subsides before the two weeks are up, but that does not mean anyone should return to school (or work) before that time elapses.

Because of teacher absence and the uncertainty of being able to get supply teachers to cover lessons we are asking students in Year 8 and Year 9 to stay at home today. We will also be asking Year 11 students to go home after their second mock examination this morning, except for History, Drama, Art, Food and MFL students who will be supported by their teachers in covering key parts of the syllabus and revision planning.
If any student in Year 8 or Year 9 is unable to stay safely at home today we will be able to accommodate them within school.
A great deal of our focus today will be on collating resources to support remote learning for students who are being asked to be at home as well as those who are required to self-isolate.
We will continue to update this page through the course of today with news of any developments or updates.

Because the number of teachers needing to self-isolate has grown overnight we are less confident that we will be able to keep the school open to all year groups. We will be able to confirm the situation by 8:00am when we will post another update on this site.
In the event of a partial closure it is likely that this will be restricted to students Year 9 or Year 8 or both year groups. We will endeavour to let parents\carers know the evening before, but will only be able to confirm on the morning of the partial closure. We will alert parents\carers of the students in the affected year group with a text message. Parents\carers of those in groups not affected by the closure will be updated through this web page. Should there be a need to be a partial closure of the school we will make arrangements so that students who are not able to stay at home can still be in school irrespective of whether their year group is involved in a partial closure.
Earlier this morning the government issued new guidance for households with possible COVID-19 infection. Please click here to view.

Boris Johnson’s statement reported at 4:55pm today was that “anyone who lives with someone who has a cough or a temperature should stay at home for 14 days.” This new guidance has not yet been mirrored on other websites but will potentially have a significant impact on staffing.
We are requesting all staff to confirm this evening whether this will mean they are required to self-isolate. Once we know those numbers we will be able to make a judgement on whether school will be running normally tomorrow.
We will provide more details through an update this page at 22:00 today (Monday 15th March)

Some students have chosen to wear “surgical” gloves. They say this will help protect them from COVID-19. Wearing gloves is not an adequate barrier to transmission, especially if the gloves are not changed and very, very regular intervals. It also could lead to them not washing their hands frequently. We are therefore discouraging the practice.

Cllr Zane Brabazon, Deputy Leader of Haringey Council, has today sent a letter to Gavin Williamson MP, Secretary of State for Education requesting more support for schools to combat coronavirus and support staff, students, schools and families in managing the current situation. You can read that letter here
Today at 11:00am updated guidance for educational settings was produced by the government. You can read that here.
This is their guidance:
Posted at 7:00
We are planning to run school entirely as normal today. With the new guidance to self-isolate if you have the symptom of a new persistent cough or a high temperature there will be some staff absences. There always is at this time of year, but now this will be more acute as they will be required to be away from school for seven days rather than until recovery. It is important to be aware that staff absence does not mean anything more worrying than a regular cold or flu. Should there be other cause for concern we will not hesitate in letting families know.
We are asking that parents\carers encourage their child to wash their hands regularly when they are in school – when they arrive, before they eat at break or lunch and when they have been to the toilet. It would be helpful if students had a hand sanitiser but we very aware that these are now extremely difficult to find. Washing with soap and water is better anyway! We are also encouraging students to be more mindful than previously about maintaining an appropriate distance from their peers and “keeping their hands to themselves.”
We are in the process of assembling resources for home study for those students who do need to self-isolate but are otherwise healthy enough to work and study. We hope to have these in place early this week.
We anticipate updates from the government on the actions school should be taking during the course of today. We do not anticipate any change in direction, but except there will be clarification of some aspects of the action plan.

You may have heard that a local secondary school, Fortismere, will be closed on Monday 16th March for a “deep clean” following a positive coronavirus result. Undoubtedly this will raise some levels of anxiety but it should not cause alarm. The numbers of positive test results in Haringey is still fairly low (9). You can keep track of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Haringey and elsewhere by visiting Public Health England’s dashboard. Neverthless, our thoughts are with those at Fortismere for whom this will be a cause for concern as well as a significant disruption.
The government has stressed that schools should do what they can to stay open, but also emphasise that people should stay at home for seven days if they develop a high temperature or new continuous cough. Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced today. This follows the news on 12th March when the government announced we are moving out of the contain phase and into delay in response to the coronavirus outbreak. This means they want people to stay at home and avoid all but essential contact with others for 7 days from the point of displaying mild symptoms, to slow the spread of infection.
The symptoms are:
You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days contact NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.
The current plans remain that schools will remain open and students should continue to assume the summer exams will carry on as normal. However. we are mindful that we may suffer staff absences due to self-isolation so have a variety of contingency plans, which includes partial school closures, should the need arise. We will keep parents and carers fully informed.
We will update this page as regularly as possible.
13th March 2020
The UK Government and Public Health England announced yesterday that we have moved from “containing” the coronavirus to “delaying it.” A key element of the new guidance is for those who have a high temperature or cough to self-isolate for seven days which they believe will have a very significant impact in the fight against coronavirus. However, the core actions for all of us to wash our hands regularly, for about 20 seconds with soap and hot water or using a sanitiser gel and to make sure we use a tissue for coughs and sneezes and “Catch it, Bin it, Kill it” remains the most important defence against the virus. The main “dos and don’ts” are available on the NHS website here.
At Highgate Wood School we are doing all we in close and regular contact with Haringey’s Public Health Directorate and PHE to ensure that we are following their advice and putting measures in place to support the guidance being followed. A lot of these actions are contained in the letter we distributed on the letter of 12th March .
With the new guidance please be aware that we are advising any student or member of staff who has a high temperature (above 37.9) or a new persistent cough, to self-isolate for seven days. They do not need to phone 111, though they should do if they feel particularly unwell or have particular concerns about their symptoms. The school will routinely authorise this absence (using a Y code) once we have been notified. If there are any concerns around this authorisation you will be informed. Guidance for self-isolation can be found on the links on the right hand side of this page (at the bottom if you are on a mobile).
We will be providing work for students who are self-isolating but well enough to study. We will also be making provision for home study should the school have to close or partially close as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak.
We are particularly mindful of those students who are preparing for public exams this summer. The current advice from the exams regulator Ofqual is that students should continue to prepare for their summer exams as normal. This is the approach that we must adopt at present. At the same time, however, we know that there are lots of alternative plans and proposals that are being discussed and that the government, the exam boards and the exam regulators are modelling different scenarios to work out what would work best in different situations. We know that students and parents across the country are worried about being the victim of something that is entirely outside of their control and schools are urging the government to provide clear guidance as soon as possible. We will update our students and their families as soon as this happens.
For now we just need to remember is that every student in every school across the country is currently facing the same concerns, the same uncertainty and the same pressures. The most important thing is to try and stop that stress impacting on your work and your preparations. We are confident that, whatever may happen, the government and the regulators will ensure that no individual or group is disadvantaged and that alternative arrangements, whatever they may be, will take into account the circumstances of those who are affected.
