At Highgate Wood School Sixth Form we want to ensure that all of our students succeed in all their courses. We have a clear entry criteria for each subject. This requirement is underpinned by a demand for all our Sixth Form students to have achieved good results across a range of subjects at GCSE.
Making the correct decision on courses at post 16 is critical. You need to get the right balance of subjects to give you a breadth of experience, and the very best chance of success overall. You need to make sure that the courses you take match your current aptitudes and enthusiasms and you must be confident that your courses will allow you to pursue the plans you have for the future. With this mind, we pride ourselves on the expert guidance we provide to our students, both during the application process and at the point of enrolment. Entry requirements for admission to Highgate Wood School Sixth Form is based entirely around ensuring students have the best chance of success in their chosen courses and post-16 pathway. It is important that the prior attainment of every student demonstrates they will be able to thrive whilst meeting the challenges their chosen courses present and that they have the required background of knowledge and understanding that those courses demand.
To study three A Levels you will need at least five grade 5s. If studying mainly science and maths based subjects, you will need a minimum of a grade 5 in maths and a minimum grade 4 in English. You will also need to meet the subject specific criteria. To study mainly literacy/humanities based subjects you will need a minimum of a grade 5 in English and a minimum of a grade 4 in maths. You will also need to meet the subject specific criteria. Students may study for four A Levels if they have a majority of grades 8 and 9 at GCSE.
To study a blend of BTEC/Diploma subjects and one or two A Levels you will need at least five grade 4s. You will require a grade 4 in both GCSE English and maths. You will also need to meet the subject specific criteria. Students who have not achieved a grade 5 in English or maths GCSE are expected to re-sit the qualification in Year 12. They will join lessons preparing for resit to gain a grade 5 or higher.
Entry requirements: A Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics.
Why retake Mathematics? Those students who are accepted into the 6th form and have narrowly missed passing Maths at GCSE with a Grade 5 will be required to resit the subject as part of their Sixth Form study programme. It is critical that students manage to achieve a Grade 5 in both mathematics and English before leaving sixth form education as this demonstrates the basic standards of literacy and numeracy that are required for almost all paths
of further study.
Qualities and skills required: Students will follow an intensive programme of preparation and revision to ensure they have the best chance of success in their maths resit.
Entry requirements: A Grade 4 GCSE English.
