Students in Years 7 and 8 choose a book of their level and read it at their own pace. When finished they take a short quiz on the computer; passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read. Accelerated Reader gives both children and teachers feedback based on the quiz results, which the tutor and English teacher then use to help the child set targets.
Children using AR choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.
At Highgate Wood School students have one of their allocated registration sessions located in the Learning Resource Centre with the focus on AR. Their teacher, tutor and our librarian will help your child choose books at an appropriate reading level that are challenging without being frustrating, ensuring that your they can pass the quiz and experience success.
Students are able to login to Accelerated Reader from any computer with an internet connection. Students in Year 7 and 8 are registered with their regular school username and password.
Parents and carers are also encouraged to login to see how well their child is progressing in their reading and to offer support and encouragement. Using your child’s username and password, you can log in to the Home Connect site to see their test results and progress. Home Connect also offers the facility to enable parents and carers to sign up to Email Alerts so they can receive a notification when they have finished reading another new book.
