Year 7 Catchup

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives state-funded schools, including special schools and alternative provision settings, additional funding to support year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or maths at the end of key stage 2 (KS2).

The wider aims of the catch up funding include:

• increase social mobility
• enable students from disadvantaged backgrounds to get to the top universities
• ensure that students from all backgrounds have an equal opportunity to be successful
• reduce the attainment gap between the highest and lowest achieving pupils nationally.

Literacy and numeracy Interventions

The strategies employed last year include:

• Accelerated Reader – The school uses the Accelerated Reader programme to support the assessment and improvement of students’ reading age supporting their basic literacy skills.
• Appointment of a numeracy coordinator – to lead on targeted numeracy intervention to raise identified students’ basic numeracy skills; pre-teaching intervention groups
• Pre-teaching Numeracy Intervention Groups –weekly pre-teaching of the following week’s maths content to targeted Year 7 intervention groups
• Purchase of NGRT assessments –to identify students in need of literacy intervention.
• Purchase of Lexonic Literacy Intervention Programmes –to deliver intervention to support students in need of improvement with key decoding, phonic and comprehension skills
• Lexonic Literacy Intervention Programmes – delivered over 6 sessions, 1 hour a week with 4 students to a group to targeted Year 7 intervention groups
• Inference Skills Catch Up Intervention – Delivered on a rolling basis across the academic year to Year 8 students identified from 2018-2019 prior intervention data.
