An example home-learning timetable Posted by HWS 07/04/20 14:00
To help structure the students’ day we suggest constructing a home-study timetable. Below are possible examples for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 and for those in Key Stage 4.
Remote Learning for the summer term – a guide for parents
Posted by Craig Hewitt 06/04/20 14:00
In this evolving situation the approach of Highgate Wood School is to create a sustainable, manageable and realistic online learning experience for our students. Show My Homework remains our established platform whilst the addition of Google Classrooms makes support available to learners from peers and teachers. Where appropriate, students will also engage in other learning activities through a variety of interactive tools, including Sam Learning, Maths Watch, My Maths and Tassomai. We have differentiated the approach for different Key Stages and Year groups due to their differing contexts, as summarised below:
Year 13
The plan for Year 13 is to focus on bridging work for their progression into Higher Education. We have already sourced a range of materials relating to this so should be in position to share this with students very soon. Students should also be able to access introductory reading lists for their chosen degree courses via the universities they have chosen. However, the one caveat to this is that there is a possibility that some students may wish to take the yet-to-be confirmed assessment in the autumn if they are not happy with their predicted grades but do not wish to wait until summer 2021 to take their exams. We don’t know what these will look like as yet, nor indeed which – if any – students will want to take them. Therefore, we have asked staff to ensure that students have sufficient resources to complete each A Level course alongside some revision resources for those wishing to continue with this (but we also recognise that some students will find it hard to motivate themselves to do this given the cancellation of the exams).
How we will set work, share resources, etc.
This will largely continue to be done via Show My Homework which is well established for these students and communication should also be well established via school email. Some teachers may also set up Google Classrooms and/or utilise other platforms which they will communicate with their individual classes.
Year 12
This will be one of our two priority groups (along with year 10) as they will be taking their A Level exams next year. Obviously they are going to miss a significant chunk of in-school learning time and our challenge is to ensure that our overall plans for everything we do between now and next summer minimises the impact of this. We have already asked Heads of Department to review the entirety of Year 12 and 13 for these students and where necessary re-plan and re-order the curriculum to minimise the impact of this lost time. We will be able to share details of this with students straight after Easter. We are asking teachers to set just as much work for Year 12 students as they would normally do in school and to prioritise them in terms of communication and feedback on work completed.

Year 11
Similarly to Year 13, the key focus for Year 11 will be on preparing them for post-16 study. We have already begun work on a series of ‘bridging materials’ which will act as an introduction to their chosen post-16 courses. Details of these should be available very soon. However, again the one caveat to this is that there is a possibility that some students may wish to take the yet-to-be confirmed assessment in the autumn if they are not happy with their predicted grades but do not wish to wait until summer 2021 to take their exams. We don’t know what these will look like as yet, nor indeed which – if any – students will want to take them. How we will set work, share resources, etc.
This will largely be done via Show My Homework which is well established for these students. There will be some cases where resources will be shared via Google Classrooms. Your child will also be invited (via a link in Show My Homework) to join a Google Classroom for each subject. Teachers will use the ‘Streams’ function in this to ‘check in’ with students and also to offer feedback on work, etc. where appropriate.
Year 10
This will be one of our two priority groups (along with year 12) as they will be taking their GCSE level exams next year. We have already asked Heads of Department to review the entirety of Year 10 and 11 for these students and where necessary re-plan and re-order the curriculum to minimise the impact of this lost time. We will be able to share details of this with students straight after Easter. We are asking teachers to set just as much work for Year 10 students as they would normally do in school and to prioritise them in terms of communication and feedback on work completed.

Key Stage 3 (year 7, 8 and 9)
For Key Stage 3 we are realistic about how much schoolwork children can do at home each day and how much feedback and support teachers can provide. We know we will have the capacity to help these students catch-up at a later point so we will not race through our planned curriculum. Instead we will be asking students in Year 7, 8 and 9 to complete around 3 hours solid school work each day, and we will be setting work accordingly.
We would also suggest that students do some exercise each day, the PE department recommends the Joe Wicks workout available daily on Youtube. We are expecting all students to read for at least 30 mins a day, we will be publishing more detailed guidance of ways parents can access resources to support reading straight after Easter. We are also compiling a comprehensive set of suggestions for cultural enrichment that can be experienced online, which we will be publishing shortly. This will mean those students motivated to read-around various subjects and extend their knowledge will be able to do so.

Remote tutoring
Maintaining some kind of contact and pastoral care during this time will be vital for students. Therefore we have set up tutor rooms in Google Classrooms for all year groups (7-13) and asked tutors to check in on a daily basis. This will normally be during tutor time, ie 11-11.25, but may vary slightly for some groups.
Guidance on online safety:
We have signposted our Online Safety webpages and also the online Bullybox and the new Classroom Alert tool within Google Classrooms. Students and others are also invited to report any concerns online to esafe@hws.haringey.sch.uk . But parents and others may also find it useful to use other reporting tools including:
We would like to emphasise the importance of securing online support from a reputable organisation/individual who can provide evidence that they are safe and can be trusted to have access to children. Support for parents and carers to keep their children safe online includes:
Other resources on our website: Our online resources are available on the school website and are growing. These have been divided into five sections, the Core Tools, resources for Mental Health and Well Being , Learning Resources, Resources to Broaden Horizons and Information Regarding Examinations.
FAQs
My child doesn’t know what work they should be doing
They need to log on to show My Homework in the first instance and check for work set there. If it still isn’t clear they should check Google Classrooms and if necessary message their classmates and teacher using the ‘streams’ function
My child has finished the work and wants to check the answers
Students can use online tools and materials to check answers and mark work themselves; many of our online platforms mark the work for them! Teachers will be clear in task setting if/when they expect work to be submitted and if/when they will provide feedback for students.
I finished all of the work that was set on Tuesday. I don’t need to work for the rest of the week
Firstly, check that this is the case! Students may have missed a task or not read instructions clearly and it is very unlikely that they would have finished all work set by Tuesday of that week. Students can also use time to develop their cultural capital, so direct them to some of the suggestions we have outlined. They could also spend some time reading (possibly extending their knowledge of one of their subjects).
My child can’t remember their password for . . .
Please email data@hws.haringey.sch.uk
My child is struggling to keep up with all of the work
Please don’t worry about this. Students will work at different rates and teachers are reflecting on the quantity and types of work set as the situation evolves. We also know people have competing demands at home. You could contact your teacher vis ‘Streams in Google classrooms’ if you want some guidance on which pieces of work to prioritise.
